Floating Offshore Wind Technology and Operations Review

This summary of floating offshore wind (FOW) has been prepared as a deliverable report for Work Package 1 of the FOW and Fishing Interaction Working Group and Roadmap project.

This resource has been developed to be read in conjunction with An Overview of Scottish Fisheries Prepared for the Floating Offshore Wind Industry (delivered by Brown & May Marine Ltd.), and both documents address the same key themes across the two industries: Technology, Marine Operations, Geographical Distribution, Lifecycle, Port Requirements and Commercial Drivers.

The FOW and Fishing Interaction Working Group and Roadmap project was established by the Floating Offshore Wind Centre of Excellence to facilitate a stakeholder engagement process to identify potential interactions between the Scottish fishing sector and future commercial FOW farms. The challenges and potential opportunities associated with these interactions will also be assessed. The project’s main output will be a roadmap outlining a portfolio of activities to address these challenges and exploit any opportunities as the industry develops. Throughout the course of the project, both this report and the Overview of Scottish Fisheries are intended to support and inform discussions as and when required.

A Decade of the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult

The last 10 years have seen a remarkable transformation in the offshore renewable energy sector, and ORE Catapult has been at the very heart of that. In that time, we’ve seen the cost of offshore wind slashed by about 70% and over 1000 offshore wind turbines installed in UK waters. New innovative technologies, such as floating offshore wind and tidal stream energy have become major players in the race towards net zero and offshore renewable energy has become a key cornerstone of the UK’s energy mix.
